LONGLINE TUNA BOATS COLLIDE

20 - 30K Estimated Damages

The captain of a Hawaii longline fishing boat, the Robin II, reported to Carroll Cox that on Oct 23, 2009, at approximately 2:45 pm, he and his crew of four were resting after setting and pulling gear.  Another Hawaiian longline boat he and his crew identified as the Jessica D, rammed or collided with his boat and caused some damage to the port side of his vessel, leaving a large rip in the metal canopy.  Both the crew and the captain claim that the captain and crew of the Jessica D did not render aid and only made contact with the captain of the Robin II after the Robin II radioed the Jessica D.

A crew member of the Robin II told Cox that the weather was clear with no strong wind or waves.  He also described the collision as causing three large booming noises when the boats collided.  No crewmembers aboard either vessel report any injuries.  A National Marine Fisheries Service agent was aboard the vessel and is said to have reported the accident to the U.S. Coastguard.  The accident occured approximately 120 miles offshore, east of the Island of Maui, Hawaii.  The captian told Cox that he returned to fishing later that day to make a couple more sets.
